Total correspondence per person
The numbers below are of the letters which were posted from or sent to each
correspondent. The numbers reflect what has survived and are accessible. The number
written was much larger, meaning that ingoing and outgoing letters
would have been in similar proportions. For example, in Whewell's case, his papers in Trinity College are mostly the letters that he
received. The surviving letters that he sent are mostly preserved in the papers
of other notables: Beaufort, Lubbock and Airy. The letters that he sent
to less eminent men, such as Ross and Dessiou, appear not to have survived. The reason why the surviving
letters sent by Airy exceed the number he received is because of the boost to
the former from his own copies of letters-out. Similarly no deposited papers
have been located for either Bunt, Roberts or Baird. Numerous phrases such as,
"I received yours of the 15th," provide ample evidence of the many letters
missing.
